Opinion: California: A misguided leader in economic protectionism

California recently added to its no-travel list. There are now 17 states California officials are forbidden to travel on state business because those states have laws that don’t pass muster in the eyes of California’s ever vigilant hall monitors. In two initiatives passed by California voters in 2008 and 2018, California has placed restrictions on out-of-state producers of agricultural products, barring the import of animal products produced in facilities that don’t meet California’s requirements on animal housing.

Opinion: What do poor balance sheets, trade wars, Impossible Burgers and trial lawyers have in common?

I’m flat busted. My Missouri corn and soybean farm is bankrupt, financially incompetent, a lousy credit risk, upside down--you pick the financial euphemism for a balance sheet that is downright ugly. I’m still paying my bills on time and eating good, due to some profitable years in the recent past, but any honest appraisal of my farm’s future income and liabilities is dark indeed. Of course, if there is any comfort to be found in shared misery, every other producer of corn and soybeans in the U.S. is in the same position.
